Vote on next week’s dinners

Family plan

To start, press 🍽️ Vote on next week’s dinners on the Plan page, or Vote on next week on the Household page. Everyone in the household suggests recipes and votes with a thumbs up or down. Then one person builds the plan, and the best-liked recipes land on next week’s dinners.

After “Added by”, the 👍 circles are the people who voted yes and the 👎 circles are the people who voted no.

Start a round#

A round is one vote for one week: the Monday to Sunday after this one. It is for a household, so you need to be in one. Any member can start it.

  1. 1

Press Vote on next week’s dinners on the Plan page

The outlined button sits under the toolbar at the top of the Plan page. It only shows when you are in a household.

You'll see: The page Vote on dinner opens.

  2. 2

Press Open voting for next week

With no round open, the page says No open round and Start next week’s vote.

You'll see: A message says Voting is open for next week. The page now shows the week and a place to add recipes.

On the Household page, the card Dinner, decided together has a Vote on next week button that starts the round at once. The card then reads No candidates yet — add a recipe to get the vote started. until someone nominates, and its button becomes Go vote.

After the plan is built, the round closes. For the next 7 days the page shows This round is closed — 3 dinners placed on the calendar. and a link, See them on the Plan page. If that round was for next week, the page adds Next week is planned. Come back next week to vote on the one after. and the Household card says Next week’s dinners are planned with a See the plan button. Once next week has started, Open voting for next week comes back.

Nominate recipes#

  1. 1

Type a recipe name in Nominate a recipe

The box lists your own recipes first, then the ones shared with the household, and narrows as you type. A recipe of yours that is not shared yet has the note Nominating shares it with your household. A recipe already in the round does not show again. Nothing matching shows No match — try a different search. Tap a recipe’s name or photo to preview it. It opens in a new tab and nominates nothing.

You'll see: Up to 8 matching recipes list under the box, each with a Nominate button.

  2. 2

Press Nominate on the recipe you want

The button nominates at once, with no confirmation. Each person can nominate as many recipes as they like.

You'll see: A message says Added to the vote, and the recipe appears in the list above the box.

Your own recipe gets shared

Nominating a recipe of your own that is not shared yet shares it with the household. It stays shared until you stop sharing it. See Can I stop sharing a recipe?

Take a nomination back#

The person who added a recipe, and the household owner, see a small × at the end of its row while the round is open.

  1. 1

    Press × on the row

Press Remove to confirm, or Cancel to keep it. Removing a nomination never unshares the recipe.

You'll see: With no votes yet, a message says Removed from the vote and the row goes. With votes, the row asks Remove this nomination? Its 2 votes go too.

Vote#

  1. 1

Press the 👍 (yes) or 👎 (no) button on a recipe

You vote once per recipe. Press the other thumb to change your mind. Press the same thumb again to take your vote back, and the count goes down. You can vote on your own nominations too.

You'll see: The button you pressed turns coloured and its count goes up by one.

Under each recipe, the circles after 👍 are the people who voted yes, and the circles after 👎 voted no. Each person keeps their own colour. On a computer, hold the pointer over a circle to see the name. The counts beside the thumbs add up the votes, and your own vote is the thumb that is coloured in. The page checks for new votes every 20 seconds.

Build the plan#

Voting checks no one’s allergies

Before you press Build plan…:
  • Tap each name in the round’s list of nominated recipes, not in the search results. The recipe page opens.
  • The warning card on that page lists any allergen it matched and who it is for.
  • The first time a recipe is checked, and again after it is edited, the AI check can take up to a minute, so a card can appear after the page loads. Wait before you decide.
  • No card does not mean safe. Read the ingredients yourself. See where the checks run.

A row can say No longer shared with the household. It can’t win. That means its owner stopped sharing the recipe, or left the household. A row that shows only Recipe, with no photo or link, is the same case. Such a recipe is never placed, whatever its votes. A recipe in Trash drops out of the list for its owner only. Everyone else sees a No longer shared with the household row. Remove the row with × if you want it gone.

Only the household owner, or the person who started the round (even if they are not the owner), can build the plan. The Build plan from votes card shows for them once at least one recipe is nominated. Other members can nominate and vote, but see no build card.

  1. 1

Set Dinners to plan, then press Build plan…

The box takes a number from 1 to 7 and starts at 5. The plan fills only empty dinner slots next week.

You'll see: The card asks you to confirm.

  2. 2

    Press Confirm

The card first asks, for example, Place 2 dinners and close the vote?, with Cancel and Confirm. The number is the real count: your Dinners to plan number, or fewer if fewer recipes qualify or fewer dinner slots are empty. If nothing can be placed, it says No dinner can be placed right now. Close the vote anyway? Once you confirm, the round is closed. The Plan page opens on this week. Go to next week, on the Family side, to see the new dinners.

You'll see: A message says how many dinners were added, such as 3 dinners added to the calendar, and the Plan page opens. The dinners are on the Family side, not Mine.

How the picks are chosen#

  • A recipe needs at least one 👍, and more 👍 than 👎. A recipe nobody voted for is never placed, even if a day is free.
  • The best come first. Most 👍 wins, then fewest 👎, then the recipe nominated earliest.
  • The picks go on the household plan, on the earliest empty dinner slots of that week, starting with the best recipe.
  • Days before today are skipped, and a slot that already has a dinner is left alone. A meal is never replaced.
  • Votes from someone who has left the household do not count.
  • A row marked No longer shared with the household is skipped.
  • Only the household plan is looked at. A dinner on someone’s own Mine plan does not block a slot, so a night can end up with two dinners.

So the plan can get fewer dinners than you asked for, or none. Add the rest yourself; see Plan meals together.

Common questions#

Is there a deadline, or a way to cancel?#

No deadline, and no way to cancel a round. It stays open until someone builds it. You can take a nomination back with × while the round is open. See Take a nomination back.

I cannot find Open voting for next week.#

There are two reasons:

  • The plan for next week is already built. The page says Next week is planned. Come back once next week has started.
  • An old round is still open. The page shows whichever round is open, even from a past week, and it hides Open voting for next week. Nominate one recipe, then someone who can build presses Build plan… and confirms. The round closes even if it adds 0 dinners. Nominating your own unshared recipe shares it with the household, so choose carefully.

I do not see Vote on next week’s dinners.#

Dinner voting is for a household on the Family plan. See Start a household.
