Save a recipe from photos or screenshots

Take a picture of a recipe in a book, on a card or on a screen, and RecipeClip types it up for you.

Add your photos#

  1. 1

Open Add recipe and choose the Photo tab

On a computer, click Add recipe at the top right. On a phone, tap the round orange Add button in the bottom bar (the second of five). Then press Photo in the row of four tabs.

You'll see: The Photo tab turns white. Below it, the box says “Drop a photo or take one”, with Take photo and Choose from gallery buttons.

  2. 2

    Add one or more pictures

Tap Take photo to open the camera inside RecipeClip. Point it at the page and press the round white button. The camera closes and the picture is added. Tap the flip icon at the top right to switch between the back and front cameras.

Tap Choose from gallery to pick pictures you already took or screenshots you saved. You can pick several at once.

If the camera does not start, allow camera access for RecipeClip in your phone settings, or use the gallery.

Drag picture files onto the dashed box, or click Choose from gallery and pick them from your files. You can pick several at once.

Copied a screenshot? Press Ctrl + V (Cmd + V on a Mac) anywhere on the page and it is added. Take photo uses your computer’s webcam.

Pictures can be JPEG, PNG, WebP or HEIC (the format iPhones use), up to 10 MB each, and up to 10 in one go. Use + Add more to add another. To remove one, tap the small × on its corner. On a computer the × shows when you point at the picture.

You'll see: A row of small previews appears, with a count such as 2 photos ready.

For the best result

Lay the page flat, fill the frame with the recipe and keep the text sharp. Include the ingredient list and the method in the same picture, or use several pages as described below.

A recipe that spans several pages#

When you add two or more pictures, a switch appears: One recipe across pages, with the note All photos are pages of the same recipe.

  • Switch it on when the pictures are pages of one recipe, for example the ingredient list on one page and the method on the next. The button changes to Read 2 pages and you get one recipe.
  • Leave it off when each picture is a different recipe. You get one recipe card per picture.

Read the photos#

  1. 1

    Press Read photo

The button shows the number you added, for example Read 2 photos, or Read 2 pages with the switch on.

You'll see: The three steps Reading the photo, Extracting ingredients and Building card tick along.

  2. 2

    Check the card

RecipeClip saves the recipe on its own. Press Go to my recipes to see it at the top of your list, or Read another to do the next one.

You'll see: The card shows the title, a short description, small labels such as “Serves 8”, “9 ingredients” and “6 steps”, the first ingredients, and “Saved to your library”.

If the reader is busy#

Saved to your library only shows when the reading finishes right away. When the reader is busy, the card says “Our reader is busy — this is queued below and will retry on its own. Nothing was lost, you can leave this page.” The photo moves to the Retrying automatically panel, with a countdown. Retries can take several minutes. It is safe to leave the page or close the app. When a retry works, the recipe appears under Recently added on this page and in your list.

If a photo can’t be read#

A picture that has no recipe on it, or is too blurry, gets its own card with Photo 1 (or the number of that picture), a short reason and a Retry button. With several failures, a Retry all failed button appears at the top. If the reader is busy, the photo is queued and tries again on its own. More in When an import is slow or fails.

Common questions#

Do iPhone photos work?#

Yes. HEIC pictures are accepted along with JPEG, PNG and WebP.

How many AI imports does this use?#

One for each picture, even when you read several pages as one recipe. Free accounts get 20 a month. Pro and Family get 100 a day. See Free, Pro and Family.

A picture says it is too large.#

Each picture can be up to 10 MB. Choose a smaller copy, or take the picture again with the camera button.

Does handwriting work?#

You can try it. A handwritten card is one of the things this tab is made for, but handwriting is harder to read than print, so check every amount before you cook. Fix anything with Edit a recipe.
