Invite and manage members

Family plan

Only the household owner invites people. Each invitation goes to one email address, holds a seat for 7 days, and can be copied, resent or taken back until it is answered.

Send an invite#

Every waiting invitation holds a seat, so members plus waiting invitations can never be more than 6. You can send until every seat is held. Each invitee can then still join, even into the last seat, because their own invitation does not count against them. The full page only appears once 6 people have actually joined.

  1. 1

    Open Household

On a computer, click your name at the top right, then Household. On a phone, tap More, the last of the five buttons in the bottom bar, then Household. You do not have a household yet? See Start a household.

You'll see: On a computer the Invite card sits to the right of the people list. On a phone it sits below it.

  2. 2

Type the person’s email under Invite someone to dinner

Use the address they sign in with. The invitation only works for that address.

You'll see: The Send invite button turns solid orange.

  3. 3

    Press Send invite

RecipeClip emails them a link. The subject reads Sam Rivera invited you to The Rivera Kitchen on RecipeClip, with your own display name and the household name. Send it only to people you mean to invite.

You'll see: A message says Invitation sent to alex@example.com, and the address appears under Pending invitations.

If the email does not go out

The invitation is still created. A message says Invitation created — email couldn’t send, so share the link instead. Copy the link from the row, as shown next, and send it yourself.

Copy, resend or take back an invite#

Every invitation that has not been answered shows under Pending invitations: the address, who sent it, how long ago, and a chip such as Expires in 6d. Each one counts as a seat on the Seats card, shown as 2 invited.

  1. 1

Press Copy link to send the invitation yourself

The link opens the same page as the email. It works for the invited address only.

You'll see: A message says Invite link copied. Paste it into a text or chat.

  2. 2

Press Resend if it expired or got lost

The old link stops working when you resend, so tell the person to use the new email. An expired invitation no longer holds a seat, so resending it needs a free seat. With none free you get Family is full (max 6 members). Revoke another invitation or remove a member first.

You'll see: A message says Resent to alex@example.com. The invitation has a fresh link and a fresh 7 days.

  3. 3

Press Revoke, then Revoke again to take an invite back

The second press is the confirmation. Cancel next to it leaves the invitation as it was. If the person opens the old link, they see We couldn’t find that invitation.

You'll see: A message says Invitation to alex@example.com revoked, and the seat is free again.

What the invited person sees#

Send these steps to the person you invite. They open the email and press the link, and the page below opens. It says who invited them and how many people are already in: Sam Rivera invited you — 1 of 6 people already planning dinner together.

  1. 1

New to RecipeClip: press Create account to join

Already have an account? Press Sign in under the button instead.

You'll see: You make an account with the invited email address, and you land back on this page afterwards.

  2. 2

Signed in with the invited address: press Accept & join

Decline turns the invitation down. It waits 60 seconds before it is sent, and an Undo button on the page cancels it in that time.

You'll see: The page changes to Welcome to The Rivera Kitchen.

  3. 3

Read Just unlocked: and press See the family

The page lists three things: Any recipe you choose to share goes into one shared library., one meal plan, and a grocery list that combines what is planned. The shared recipe list starts empty until someone shares a recipe, and everyone can vote on next week’s dinners; see Vote on next week’s dinners and Share recipes, plans and lists. Look at this week’s plan opens the Plan page instead.

You'll see: The Household page opens with you listed as a member.

Remove a member#

Removing someone unshares their recipes

Every recipe the person shared is unshared. The meals they put on the shared plan stay there, with their name and (left) after it. Meals other people planned with their recipes show in italics as No longer shared with your family, with no name under them. On the meals the person planned themselves, the note reads Alex Rivera has left the household. Undo restores everything for 60 seconds. After that the recipes stay unshared.
  1. 1

Press Remove next to the person under Who’s in

You will not find Remove on your own row, and members do not see it at all. After a hand-over, the person who pays has Pays for the plan in place of Remove: whoever pays cannot be removed.

You'll see: Their row turns into a question: Remove Alex Rivera from the household? They’ll immediately lose access to the shared meal plan, and every recipe they shared stops being shared.

  2. 2

    Press Remove again

Cancel keeps them. The person also loses the Pro features that came with the household.

You'll see: A bar at the bottom says Alex Rivera is off the plan. and the seat is free.

  3. 3

Changed your mind? Press Undo on the bar

The bar stays for a short while, and it stays if you leave the page and come back. Once it has gone, send a new invitation.

You'll see: A message says Restored and the person is back in Who’s in.

Common questions#

It says my household is full.#

This household is full — 6 of 6 seats are used or invited. Remove someone to free up a seat. Seats count people and waiting invitations, so you cannot send more once they add up to 6. Take back an invitation with Revoke, or remove a member.

The person sees “The Rivera Kitchen is full”.#

All 6 seats are taken right now. 6 people have already joined. Free a seat by removing a member. The invitation stays valid, so the person opens the same link again.

It says the invitation was already sent, or the person is already a member.#

Each address can have one open invitation. Use Resend on the one in the list. A person who is already in the household does not need another.

The person sees Wrong account.#

They are signed in with a different address than the one you invited. The page names both. They press Sign out & use a different account and sign in with the invited one. Or you revoke and invite the address they use.

The person sees This invite has expired.#

Invitations last 7 days. Press Resend on it, and they use the new email. Resending needs a free seat, because an expired invitation no longer holds one.

The person already belongs to a household.#

They can be in only one. They have to leave their current household first. See Leave a household.
