Swap an ingredient

Missing the feta, or cooking for someone who is vegan? Ask RecipeClip for swaps and it suggests a handful, with how much to use and what changes in the dish.

Find a swap#

   Open the recipe and find the ingredient

   On a phone the arrows are always showing. On a computer they appear when you point at the row.

   

   You'll see: Each ingredient row ends with a small icon of two arrows.

   Tap the arrows

   It usually takes a few seconds. The ingredient is read together with the recipe’s name, so the swaps suit this dish, not just the ingredient on its own.

   You'll see: The icon spins and a panel opens under the row saying Looking for swaps…

   Read the list under Swaps for

   

   You'll see: Three to five options appear, each in its own card.

   Tap the × to close the panel

   Open the same ingredient again in the same visit and the answer is still there, with no wait.

   You'll see: The panel folds away.

What you get#

Every suggestion has the same parts.

• The name of the swap, in bold.
• A ratio on the right, such as 1:1, or a different amount to use.
• A short note on how the flavor or texture changes.
• Green tags when it suits a diet, such as vegan, gluten-free or dairy-free. The AI sets these tags and they are not an allergy check, so read the ingredients.

Usually one of the suggestions is something most kitchens already have. Your recipe is not changed. If you want to keep a swap, edit the ingredient yourself. See Edit a recipe.

On the Free plan#

Free accounts see a small lock where the arrows would be. The ingredient list and everything else on the recipe works as usual.

   Tap the lock

   Nothing is charged and no search happens. To unlock swaps, see Start a free trial or upgrade.

   

   You'll see: A note appears on its own line under that ingredient, saying Ingredient substitutions — part of Pro.

Common questions#

It says it could not find swaps.#

The message reads Couldn’t find substitutions. Try again. Tap the arrows again to retry. If you ask for a lot of swaps in a short time, you may reach your daily AI limit and have to wait.

Can I swap from cook mode?#

Swaps live on the recipe page, not in cook mode. Look them up before you start, then cook as usual. See Cook step by step.
