Share recipes, plans and lists

Family plan

A household shares three things: one meal plan, one grocery list and the recipes each person chooses to share. Each screen has a Mine side that stays yours and a household side that everyone uses.

Your plan and the household’s#

When you are in a household, the Plan page has a switch with Mine and Family. Mine is your own plan, which nobody else sees. Family is the shared one. Under the page title you see the household name so you know which plan you are looking at.

The Plan page opens on Family when you are in a household. A new member lands on the shared side, which may be empty: tap Mine to see your own plan.

  1. 1

Open Plan and choose Mine or Family

On a computer, click Plan in the top bar. On a phone, tap Plan, the third of the five buttons in the bottom bar. The switch is at the top right of the page, to the left of Week and Month on a computer.

You'll see: The week changes to that plan. Your choice stays in the address, so a reload keeps it.

  2. 2

Click or tap a name under the title to see one person’s meals

The row shows up once two or more people are in the household. Each person has a colour, the same one as on the Household page.

You'll see: Only that person’s meals stay in the week. Everyone brings the rest back.

Everyone in the household sees the same Family week and can add, move and remove meals. Each meal shows who added it. A meal whose recipe you cannot open shows as No longer shared with your family; see What a member sees. For the rest of the Plan page, see Plan your meals.

Plan meals together#

  1. 1

Switch to Family, then add a meal to a day

On a computer, click the + in an empty box for that day and meal. On a phone, pick Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner at the top of the list, then tap the dashed Add button on the day.

You'll see: A window opens with the title Add to The Rivera Kitchen and the day you chose.

  2. 2

Search or scroll the list, then tap a recipe

The list holds only the recipes that people have shared with the household, not everything you have saved. The Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner switch in the window sets the meal.

You'll see: The meal lands on the shared plan, with your name on it. Everyone in the household sees it.

Nothing in the list yet? The window says Nothing shared with The Rivera Kitchen yet. and offers Go to your recipes, which opens your Recipes page. Share a recipe or two first, as shown below, and they appear here.

Not sure what to cook? The button Vote on next week’s dinners under the toolbar opens the voting page, and once someone builds the plan the winning recipes go onto empty dinner slots on this plan. See Vote on next week’s dinners.

What a member sees#

A member opens the same Family week and sees every meal and who added it. The title and photo show for recipes that are shared with the household. A meal whose recipe the member cannot read shows in italics as No longer shared with your family, with no photo and no link. A line under it names the owner in two cases. If the owner is still in the household it reads Ask Sam Rivera to share it with the household. If the owner has left and is the person who put the meal on the plan, it reads Alex Rivera has left the household. Any other meal has no name under it. On the month grid the line is a tooltip only. Nothing opens, so nobody can check its allergens: ask the owner to share it again, remove the meal, or add the dish again from a recipe you can open.

Shop from one list#

The grocery list has the same switch. The household side builds a list from the shared plan, so it holds what everyone planned. The My items box is yours alone and is not shared.

  1. 1

    Open Grocery

On a computer, click Grocery in the top bar. On a phone, tap Grocery, the fourth button in the bottom bar. The page opens on Mine.

You'll see: The switch next to the Grocery list title reads Mine and the name of your household.

  2. 2

    Press the household name

The list covers a window that starts today, not the start of the calendar week: This week means today plus the next 7 days, so earlier meals this week are left out. Press Change to widen the range. Under the title, the line From 11 recipes and the dates only appears once the list has items. Until then it reads Everything from the plan, combined and sorted by aisle. That is what a household sees while nothing is planned in the range.

You'll see: The switch moves to the household name and the list is rebuilt from the Family week for the dates shown, such as This week. Press Change to pick other days.

Ticking, hiding pantry staples, copying and sharing work as on your own list. See Make a grocery list.

Share a recipe with the household#

Only you can share your own recipes. Shared recipes are the ones that appear in the household’s Add to window on the Plan page.

  1. 1

Open one of your recipes and press More options

More options is the round button with three dots, next to Add to plan on a phone and under the buttons on a computer.

You'll see: A menu opens. Near the bottom is Share with The Rivera Kitchen, with your own household name.

  2. 2

Press Share with The Rivera Kitchen

The recipe now shows in the household’s planning window. Already shared with family means it was shared before.

You'll see: A message says Shared with The Rivera Kitchen. Open the menu again and the row reads Shared with The Rivera Kitchen and turns green.

Stop sharing a recipe#

  1. 1

Open Household and find Recipes you share

The card only shows once you have shared at least one recipe. It lists your shares only.

You'll see: The card lists each recipe you have shared, with a Stop sharing button.

  2. 2

Press Stop sharing, then Stop sharing again

The row asks Stop sharing Honey Garlic Chicken Breast? The household can’t open it any more, and meals planned with it show as “No longer shared”. Your copy stays as it is. Cancel keeps it shared.

You'll see: A message says Honey Garlic Chicken Breast is no longer shared with the household. with the name of your recipe.

Common questions#

My recipe is not in the list when I plan in Family.#

The household list only has shared recipes. Switch to Mine to plan a recipe that is not shared, or share it with the household first.

Does anyone see my own plan?#

No. Mine is private to you. Only what is on the Family side is shared.

Can I stop sharing a recipe?#

Yes. Press Stop sharing on the Recipes you share card on the Household page; see Stop sharing a recipe. The household can no longer open it, and meals already planned with it show as No longer shared with your family. Your own copy does not change. To share it again, use Share with in the recipe’s More options menu.

What happens to the shared plan if I leave?#

You lose the shared plan and list, and your own Mine side stays as it was. Every recipe you shared is unshared. Your meals on the shared plan stay there with your name and (left) after it. Meals other people planned with your recipes show as No longer shared with your family, with no name under them. On a meal you planned with your own recipe, the note reads Sam Rivera has left the household (your name). Undo restores it for 60 seconds. See Leave a household.
