Edit a recipe

Imports are rarely perfect and family recipes change. Edit mode lets you fix the words, the amounts and the steps, add your own notes, and every save keeps the old version in case you want it back.

Open edit mode#

  1. 1

Open the recipe and press the pencil, Edit recipe

The pencil is at the top right of the recipe page. You can also press More options (the three dots) and choose Edit recipe.

You'll see: A bar saying EDITING appears with Cancel and Save, and the title and details turn into boxes you can type in.

Change the title, description and times#

  1. 1

Click the title, the description or a time box and type

The big title is the first box. Under it are the description, then Prep time, Cook time and Servings. Write times the way you would say them, such as 15 min. Use one number for servings, such as 4. A range like 4-6 stops the servings box on the recipe page from scaling the amounts (see Use a recipe page).

You'll see: The text changes as you type. Nothing is saved until you press Save.

Record the book and page#

If the recipe comes from a cookbook, note where, so you can find the page again. Both boxes are optional.

  1. 1

Fill in Book or source title and Page

The grey examples are e.g. The Joy of Cooking and 142.

You'll see: After you save, the line above the title names the book and a chip under the title shows the book and page, such as The Joy of Cooking, p. 142.

Change ingredients#

Each ingredient is one line: the amount and the name together, like 2 tbsp olive oil. When you save, RecipeClip splits the amount from the name for you.

  1. 1

Click a line to change it, or press the minus at its end to remove it

The minus is at the right edge of the line, and its label is Remove ingredient.

You'll see: Your change replaces the old text on that line. A removed line disappears from the list.

  2. 2

Press Add ingredient to add one

You'll see: A new empty line appears at the bottom, ready to type in.

Change steps#

  1. 1

Click a step to reword it, or press the minus beside it to remove it

The minus is labelled Remove step.

You'll see: The step text is editable in place. After a removal the remaining steps renumber themselves.

  2. 2

Press Add step for a new one

You'll see: A new empty step is added at the end.

Add notes#

  1. 1

Click the NOTES box and type

The empty box shows the grey line Tips, swaps, what you’d change next time…. Write anything you want to see next time you cook it.

You'll see: Your words show on the recipe page after you save.

Photos are edited here too. See Add photos to a recipe.

Save or cancel#

  1. 1

Press Save to keep your changes

The bar with Save and Cancel stays at the top of the screen while you scroll.

You'll see: A message says Changes saved and the page goes back to normal view.

  2. 2

Or press Cancel, next to Save, to throw them away

Cancel does not ask you to confirm, so be sure before you press it. Photos you added or deleted are the exception: those save right away.

You'll see: The page returns to normal view with the recipe exactly as it was.

Start cooking leaves edit mode

Pressing Start cooking while you are editing asks first, and any unsaved changes are lost if you go on.

Go back to an older version#

Every time you save an edit, the recipe keeps a copy of the earlier version. You can look at the differences and put an old version back. This is for the owner of the recipe.

  1. 1

Press More options, then Version history

You'll see: A panel called Version History slides in from the right. A recipe you have never edited says No previous versions yet. Versions are saved automatically when you edit a recipe.

  2. 2

Pick a version from the list

Rows made by a restore carry a label.

You'll see: Each row shows a number like v5, the title and when it was saved. The newest is at the top.

  3. 3

    Read what changed

It groups the changes under Title, Description, Details, Notes, Ingredients and Steps. Press Diff to switch to View, which shows the whole version without the highlights. The very first version says Initial version — no previous version to compare against.

You'll see: Under Changes from v4 → v5, new words are highlighted in green and removed words are struck through in red.

  4. 4

Press Restore (ring 4 above) to go back to it

Restoring is safe. Before it changes anything, RecipeClip saves your current recipe as a new version labelled something like Before restoring v4, so you can undo the restore the same way.

You'll see: A message says Recipe restored to this version and the panel closes.

Free plan over the recipe limit

If some of your recipes are locked read-only because you are over the free limit, you can still read their history, but Restore is turned off. See Free, Pro and Family.

Common questions#

I pressed Cancel by mistake. Can I get my edits back?#

No. Cancel throws away anything you have not saved. Photos are the exception, because they save as soon as you add them.

Why do my ingredient lines look different after saving?#

Saving splits each line into an amount and a name, so 1 pinch flaky salt shows as flaky salt with 1 pinch beside it. The words are the same.

I deleted the whole recipe.#

It is in Trash for 30 days. See Delete and restore recipes.
