Delete and restore recipes

When you delete a recipe it goes to Trash and stays there for 30 days. You can bring it back until then. After that it is removed for good.

Delete a recipe#

Share links end with the recipe

Once a recipe is deleted for good (with Delete forever, with Empty Trash, or on its own after 30 days), every share link you sent stops working. Visitors see This recipe has been deleted. While the recipe is in Trash its links stay locked. See Choose who sees a recipe.

There are a few ways. Pick the one that is closest to where you already are. First, from the Recipes page:

  1. 1

Switch to List view and tap the three dots on the recipe, then Delete

You'll see: A box asks Delete this recipe? and says it moves to Trash and can be restored for 30 days.

  2. 2

    Tap Delete in the box

You'll see: The recipe leaves the list and a message says Moved to Trash with an Undo button.

  1. 1

Point at the recipe card and click the trash can

The trash can appears in the top right of the photo when you point at the card, next to the heart.

You'll see: A box asks Delete this recipe? and says it moves to Trash and can be restored for 30 days.

  2. 2

    Click Delete in the box

You'll see: The recipe leaves the list and a message says Moved to Trash with an Undo button.

From the recipe page#

  1. 1

Press More options, then Delete recipe

You'll see: A box titled Delete recipe says it moves to Trash and can be restored for 30 days.

  2. 2

    Press Delete in the box

You'll see: You go back to the Recipes page, and a message says Moved to Trash with a View Trash button.

Only the owner can delete

Delete recipe only appears on recipes you saved yourself.

Delete several at once#

  1. 1

Press Select on the Recipes page and tap the recipes

See Find your recipes for the details of Select mode.

You'll see: The bar above the list counts them, for example 2 selected, and a red Delete button appears.

  2. 2

Press the red Delete 2 button, then Delete

You'll see: The box asks Delete 2 recipes?. After you confirm, they all move to Trash together.

Open Trash#

  1. 1

Press Trash at the top right of the Recipes page

A message after a delete also has a View Trash button that goes straight there.

You'll see: The Trash page lists every deleted recipe with a line such as Deletes forever in 29 days.

Restore a recipe#

  1. 1

Press Restore on the recipe’s row

If you only just deleted it, the Undo button in the Moved to Trash message does the same thing.

You'll see: The row leaves Trash and a message says Restored to your library with an Open button. The recipe is back on the Recipes page.

Delete forever#

To remove one recipe before its 30 days are up, delete it forever. This cannot be undone.

Its share links stop working too.

  1. 1

Press Delete forever on the recipe’s row

You'll see: A box asks Delete forever?, names the recipe, and says it leaves your collections and meal plans too.

  2. 2

Press Delete forever in the box

You'll see: A message says Deleted forever and the row disappears. Cancel keeps it in Trash.

Empty Trash#

Emptying Trash deletes every recipe in it for good, and their share links stop working.

  1. 1

Press Empty Trash at the top right of the Trash page

You'll see: A box asks how many recipes you are about to delete forever, for example Delete 8 recipes forever?

  2. 2

Press Empty Trash in the box

You'll see: A message says Trash emptied. Everything in Trash is gone for good, along with its collection and meal plan entries.

An empty Trash says Trash is empty and offers a button back to your recipes.

Common questions#

How long do I have?#

30 days from the day you deleted it. Each row says how long is left, such as Deletes forever in 29 days.

Are the photos kept too?#

The recipe is restored as it was, with its photos, notes and history.

Can I always restore a recipe on the Free plan?#

Not always. Restoring right after you delete (within 10 minutes, for example with Undo) always works. After 10 minutes, a Free account that already has 50 recipes cannot restore one, and a message says you have reached the free plan limit. Recipes in Trash do not count toward the 50, so delete or upgrade to make room, then restore.

I deleted by mistake.#

Press Undo in the message if it is still on screen. Otherwise open Trash and press Restore.
