Upload a cooking video

Pro or Family

Have a cooking clip saved as a file? Upload it and RecipeClip watches it, then builds a recipe card. This needs a Pro or Family plan.

Do you have a link instead?

Links to TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube videos go in the Link tab, and they work on every plan. Use this page only when you have the video file itself. See Save a recipe from a link or video.

Upload a video#

  1. 1

Open Add recipe and choose the Video tab

On a computer, click Add recipe at the top right. On a phone, tap the round orange Add button in the bottom bar (the second of five). Then press Video in the row of four tabs.

You'll see: The Video tab turns white. Below it, the box says “Upload a video” and has a Choose video button.

  2. 2

Press Choose video and pick the file

On a phone, this opens your video library. On a computer, it opens a file picker.

You'll see: The file name and size appear with “Uploading your video…”

  3. 3

Wait while it reads the video

A small file may jump straight to “Reading the recipe…”, because the upload is quick. A full three-minute clip can take up to a minute. Stay on the page until it finishes.

You'll see: The message changes to “Reading the recipe…”.

  4. 4

    Open your recipe

Press View recipe to open it, or Upload another to add a second video.

You'll see: The card shows the title, “Serves 6”-style labels, the first ingredients and “Saved to your library”.

If the importer is busy

You may see Our importer is busy and a note that the upload is queued. Nothing is lost. The video appears under Retrying automatically as Uploaded video, tries again by itself, and lands in your recipes when it works. You can leave the page.

What the video can be#

  • Up to 3 minutes long.
  • MP4, MOV or WebM.
  • Under 10 MB.

The size limit is the one people hit. A clip downloaded from a short-video app is usually small enough. A raw recording from your phone camera usually is not. If you pick a file that is too big, you see That file is too large before anything uploads.

Press Try again to choose a different file. A lower export quality or a shorter clip brings the size down. Two other messages you may meet: That video is too long (trim it to 3 minutes) and “That file isn’t a video we can read” (use MP4, MOV or WebM).

What Free accounts see#

On a Free account the Video tab has a small Pro & Family label with a padlock, the heading Upload the clip itself, a note that video links still work on every plan, and an Unlock video upload button that opens the upgrade options. Everything else on the Add page still works on Free, including video links. See Free, Pro and Family and Start a free trial or upgrade.

Common questions#

Does this use my AI imports?#

Yes, an upload counts as one AI import. Pro and Family get 100 a day, per kind of import. (Free accounts get 20 a month for everything, but cannot upload files.)

My phone recording is too big. What now?#

Trim it to the part that shows the recipe, or export it at a lower quality in your phone’s video editor. If the video came from a social app, paste its link in the Link tab instead. That way there is no file to shrink.

The video has no talking and no text. Will it work?#

RecipeClip can only write down what it can see or hear. A video that shows quantities on screen or says them out loud works best. If the card is thin, add the missing amounts with Edit a recipe.
