Share a recipe
Send a recipe to anyone with a link. Your friend can read a public recipe in a browser with no account. A private recipe asks them to request access first. Either way you stay in charge and can turn a link off.
Send a public recipe#
A public recipe has one link that anyone can open. If the recipe is still private, first follow Choose who sees a recipe, or skip to Send a private recipe.
- 1
Press Copy public link
On a computer it is the share icon in the row under Start cooking, next to the heart and the three dots. On a phone, tap More options (the three dots), then Copy public link. You'll see: A message says
Link copied
. The link is on your clipboard. - 2
Paste the link into a message
Paste it into a text, an email or a chat. The public link always shows the recipe as it is now, so if you edit the recipe later, your friend sees the new version. You'll see: Your friend gets a link like recipeclip.app/u/yourname/recipe-name.
Send a private recipe#
On a private recipe the same icon is called Share recipe. It makes a link to a saved copy of the recipe as it is right now. Because the recipe is private, your friend is asked to request access before they can read it. To see a share link open for a stranger, the recipe has to be public, because a private recipe shows the request screen. While a recipe is public, the icon copies the public link and Share recipe is not offered. A share link you made while it was private stays in Manage share links, and it opens for anyone once the recipe is public.
- 1
Press Share recipe
On a computer it is the same share icon as above, now labelled Share recipe. On a phone, open More options and choose Share recipe. The picture shows the phone menu. You'll see: A message says
Share link copied
. The link looks like recipeclip.app/s/ followed by letters and numbers. - 2
Paste the link into a message
What happens next is covered in Requests to see a private recipe. You'll see: Your friend opens it and sees a request screen with the recipe's title.
Each press makes a new link. A link keeps showing the recipe as it was when you made it, even if you edit the recipe later.
What your friend sees#
Nobody can change your recipe from either link. The two links differ in what they show and when:
| Public link | Share link | |
|---|---|---|
| You get it from | Copy public link, on a public recipe | Share recipe, on a private recipe |
| Looks like | recipeclip.app/u/yourname/recipe-name | recipeclip.app/s/ and a code |
| Shows | The recipe as it is now. Your edits show. | The recipe as it was when you made the link |
| Who can open it | Anyone while the recipe is public. A request screen once you make it private. | A request screen while the recipe is private. Anyone while it is public. |
| Comments | None | Yes, each link has its own thread |
| Turn it off | Make private | Revoke |
- On either link, signed out, they see a short sign-up card with a Start free button at the bottom.
- Signed in, on a public link they see Fork & Remix. On a share link they see Bookmark and Fork and remix. Fork saves a copy to their own library. Bookmark only keeps a pointer to your recipe, not a copy. On a private recipe, fork does not work, even for someone you approved. See Explore other cooks’ recipes.
- Only a share link has a comment box at the end. See Comments.
See your share links#
- 1
Open More options and choose Manage share links
You'll see: A panel called Your share links opens under the recipe’s buttons.
- 2
Read each link's status
Live means anyone with the link can read the recipe. Locked means the recipe is private, so the link asks visitors to request access. If you have not made a link, the panel saysYou haven’t published a link to this recipe yet.
You'll see: Each link shows Live, or Locked with the words
asks to request access
.
To get a link again, press Copy beside it. The button turns to Copied for a moment, and a message says Share link copied
. If the browser blocks copying, a message tells you to select the link and copy it by hand.
Turn a link off#
- 1
Press Revoke next to the link
The box says anyone with this link will see a page that no longer exists, and that other links to the recipe keep working. Press Cancel if you picked the wrong link. Anyone who opens a revoked link seesThat page isn’t here.
You cannot bring the same link back, but you can make a new one. You'll see: A box asks
Revoke this share link?
Press Revoke link. A message saysShare link revoked — the page is gone
, and the link leaves the list.
Revoke removes a link, not the recipe
Your recipe is not touched. Revoke only removes one share link. To stop people reading the public link too, choose Make private, see Choose who sees a recipe.Deleting a recipe for good ends its links
When a recipe is deleted for good, with Delete forever, Empty Trash or on its own after 30 days in Trash, every share link to it stops working. Visitors seeThis recipe has been deleted. A recipe that is still in Trash keeps its links locked. See Delete and restore recipes and Who can still see a private recipe.
Share a collection or with your household#
A whole collection has its own link, covered in Organize recipes into collections. If you have a household, the recipe’s More options menu also has Share with followed by your household’s name. See Share recipes, plans and lists.
Common questions#
Does my friend need a RecipeClip account?#
Not to read a recipe that is public. To save their own copy or leave a comment they need to sign in or sign up, which is free.
Why does my old link not say a newer version exists?#
The note A newer version of this recipe is available
shows on an old link only from your second edit on. After your first edit, a new link is still counted as the same version as the old one, so nothing changes. Edit again, press Share recipe, and the old link shows the note.
If I edit the recipe, does the link change?#
A public link always shows the latest recipe. A share link from Share recipe keeps the version you shared. Press Share recipe again after an edit to share the new version.
Can I send the address from my browser bar instead?#
Only to someone who can already see the recipe. The address of a recipe page in your library starts with /recipe/
. It opens for you, your household, people you approved, and anyone if the recipe is public. Everyone else sees We couldn’t find that recipe.
Send a share link or the public link instead.
I do not see a share icon.#
On a phone the toolbar has no share icon. Tap More options, the three dots, and choose Copy public link or Share recipe there. On a computer, if the recipe belongs to someone in your household and they keep it private, you cannot share it outside the household. Only the person who saved it can make it public.
