Type in a recipe

Use the Manual tab when the recipe is not on a page, in a video or on paper: it is yours, from memory. It takes a couple of minutes and uses none of your AI imports.

Type it in#

  1. 1

Open Add recipe and choose the Manual tab

On a computer, click Add recipe at the top right. On a phone, tap the round orange Add button in the bottom bar (the second of five). Then press Manual, the last of the four tabs.

You'll see: The Manual tab turns white. Below it, a form opens with Title at the top and, further down, Ingredients and Method.

  2. 2

    Fill in Title

Type the name of the dish, for example Skillet Cornbread.

You'll see: The title is the only box marked with a red star.

  3. 3

    Add the details you know

Description is one line about the dish. Servings takes a number, such as 6. Prep and Cook take times, such as 10 min and 22 min. Photo URL is optional: paste a link to a picture of the dish if you have one.

You'll see: These show on the recipe card in your list.

Ingredients and steps#

  1. 1

    Write the first ingredient

Type it the way you would say it, amount first, for example 1 cup yellow cornmeal. The recipe page may show the amount in its own column: “6 apples” shows as “apples” with “6” beside it.

You'll see: The counter next to Ingredients reads 1 added.

  2. 2

Press Add ingredient for each one after that

To remove a line, press the small × at its right.

You'll see: A new empty line appears under the last one.

  3. 3

Write the first step under Method, then press Add step for the rest

One action to a step reads best, for example Heat the oven to 425 F with a cast iron skillet inside.

You'll see: Steps are numbered for you as you add them.

Save it#

  1. 1

    Press Save recipe

A recipe needs a title, at least one ingredient and at least one step. If one is missing, a message tells you which: Recipe needs a title, Add at least one ingredient or Add at least one step. Whatever you typed stays on the page. Saved by mistake? See Delete and restore recipes.

You'll see: A short “Recipe saved” message pops up and you land on Recipes, with the new recipe in your list.

Add a photo after saving

The form only takes a photo link. To add more pictures, save the recipe first, then see Add photos to a recipe.

Common questions#

It says my recipe box is full.#

Free accounts hold 50 recipes. At that point, saving another opens the upgrade options and nothing you typed is lost. See Free, Pro and Family.

Can I paste a whole recipe into the form?#

There is a separate box for each ingredient and each step, so paste them one at a time. For a long recipe that is already on a page or a screen, a link or a screenshot is faster.

Can I change it later?#

Yes. Open the recipe and use Edit a recipe to change anything you typed.
